Ioanida Costache

Ioanida Costache is a Romani violinist, video and sound artist, and scholar. She hails from Milwaukie, Oregon, where her parents landed after immigrating from Bucharest, Romania. Her artistic and scholarly works explore issues of identity, the afterlives of historical trauma, and representation/mis-representation. Her work as a video and sound artist has been exhibited in New York City, Bucharest and at the 2022 Roma Exhibition Collateral Event at the 59th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. Currently, she is an assistant professor of ethnomusicology at Stanford University. Her research explores issues of race and ethnicity, performance/construction of identity, cultural memory, trauma, and history as they intersect in Romani musico-oral traditions.
